Once Bitten, Twice Shy

I remember our first meeting
It was love at first sight
I loved how you stood gleaming
You loved how we fit right

I picked you out from a crowd
You felt chosen and glowed with pride
It was an attraction easily found
Vows of comfort deep and wide

But after the initial promise
With familiarity bred contempt
And no amount of ever fervent wish Could lift the unease and discontent

Now I walk away from an aching past
You are neglected to a darkness inside We never really fit, I realize at last
After suffering a dozen shoe bites
